Ian

From a studio high above the clouds of the Okanagan Valley. This is the cannabis potcast.

00;00;09;01 - 00;00;14;29

Ian

Exploring the world of Canadian cannabis culture. One toke at a time.

00;00;15;02 - 00;00;19;16

Ian

That is your host and Bud tender Gary Johnson.

00;00;19;18 - 00;00;44;06

Gary Johnston

And might I say, this is an entirely appropriate time to say welcome to the Cannabis potcast. Maybe even this is the third, fourth, fifth time you've been back. Maybe it's been ten or this could be your very first visit. In either case, I'm especially happy to welcome you to the Cannabis potcast. We're going to spend the next 30 minutes or so talking about cannabis, a plant that I am absolutely passionate about.

00;00;44;08 - 00;01;09;05

Gary Johnston

Now, before we get too much further, let me remind you this podcast is intended for those of legal consumption age in your jurisdiction and is intended purely for entertainment and perhaps educational purposes. You should always consume your cannabis responsibly and in episode 210. My goodness, we're looking at some salary information in the cannabis industry, with an emphasis on on what Bud tenders are looking for.

00;01;09;08 - 00;01;30;22

Gary Johnston

We're also interested in the fact the companies in Canada continue to expand. Rubicon and Mid Farm are just about to close their deal to buy the facility and hope for Rubicon. And we're going to talk about glacial gold and the fact that unfortunately, it doesn't have much impact on me. And on Cultivar Corner, brought to you by Up in Smoke.

00;01;30;24 - 00;01;47;08

Gary Johnston

We are doing grape animal shatter from dashboards. Tasty at 82% THC. All of that and more on episode 210 of the Cannabis potcast.

00;01;47;10 - 00;02;13;09

Gary Johnston

And as always, thank you for being here. I truly appreciate the fact that you are a listener of the Cannabis potcast. And for one more time, I'm going to say thank you to my patrons at Patreon. And I want to say thanks to Tony, Rob, Gage, Lloyd, Roger, Justin, and Lindsay. I so much appreciated your support and the time that you've been a fact of my Patreon, but it's ending.

00;02;13;12 - 00;02;32;11

Gary Johnston

It's gone now. If you go to Patreon, you'll not be able to sign up for the Cannabis potcast, but if you would like to still participate, go to buy me a coffee.com/cannabis potcast. If you like what you hear and you feel so inclined, you could buy me a doobie. And now let's get to our first story. And we have talked about this before.

00;02;32;11 - 00;03;01;25

Gary Johnston

We will pick up this story from DragonCon. Meta Farm Labs and Rubicon Organics are close to closing their Kenneth Arms deal. Meta Farm Labs Corporation and Rubicon Organics say they are one step closer to closing a deal for Metaphor Farm to sell the former Cana Farms facility to Rubicon. Both companies announced the removal of all conditions precedent on May 22nd, related to the previously announced agreement to sell Rubicon, the BC facility, for 4.5 million.

00;03;01;26 - 00;03;42;05

Gary Johnston

In cash. Meta farm first took ownership of the 47,500 square foot indoor Cana Farms cultivation facility in Hope, as part of its 2023 acquisition of Vital Cannabis, which had acquired Kenna Farms in 2018. David Pidcock, CEO of Meta Farm, says the sale will bolster Meta Farm's already strong cash position and virtually debt free financial status. The 4.5 billion in cash proceeds from divesting non-core assets supports our roadmap to deliver long term value for shareholders and partners, enabling continued focus on accelerating international growth and exploration of key acquisition opportunities.

00;03;42;07 - 00;04;11;02

Gary Johnston

Rubicon, which currently operates a large greenhouse facility in B.C., expects the new facility will allow the company to expand its capacity significantly. Our acquisition of the facility marks a pivotal step forward for Rubicon Organics, said Margaret Brodie, CEO. The whole facility enhances our ability to meet growing demand for our premium brand, accelerate innovation and drive long term value for shareholders.

00;04;11;05 - 00;04;52;07

Gary Johnston

Rubicon estimates annual production capacity of the Hope facility to be about 4500kg, and expects its first harvest by the end of 2025, with revenue realized in early 2026. Metaphor Labs Corp reported net revenue of 10.8 million, gross profit of nearly 4.2 million, and a net loss of $387,000 in the three months ended March 31st. 12, 2025. Rubicon organics net revenue of 14.2 million in the three months ended December 31st thousand, 2024, and an increase of 42% from the same period in the prior year and its highest ever quarterly revenue.

00;04;52;09 - 00;05;25;00

Gary Johnston

Meta farms is also currently facing pressure from a dissident proxy circular filed on May 7th, 2025, by Apollo Technology Capital Corporation outlining Apollo's intention to nominate six individuals for election to Mid Farms Board of Directors at Mid Farm's upcoming annual and special meeting of shareholders scheduled for June 16th, 2025. And now you have it. They're almost finished completing the sale, and Rubicon is about to grow with their new facility in Hope.

00;05;25;02 - 00;05;29;13

Ian

For the cannabis infused studio in the clouds. This is the cannabis potcast.

00;05;29;15 - 00;06;07;15

Gary Johnston

If you haven't heard me talk about Canas before, let me do so. It has mirror horror like, I've known Kaz for what, about five years now? I guess. I first worked with him at Indigenous Bloom, and then he came to join me. It separately for a little while, and now he is repping from Glacial Gold. I love it and I really want to thank has for the box of goodies from Glacial Gold to kind of help my situation as I try to figure out doing less cannabis and whether or not any of these others are going to have an impact.

00;06;07;17 - 00;06;32;14

Gary Johnston

I really so I'm really sorry to say this, Kaz, but all the oils and all of the capsules and I've done many of them and they're not having an effect on me. So, let's be clear. So I have done. Max, THC THC drops, that's 30 of just THC. I've done some of those. I haven't filled anything out of that.

00;06;32;16 - 00;07;05;09

Gary Johnston

I've done some of these CBN, CBD ten and ten soft gels. Trying a couple at night. But I haven't felt anything from those. Same thing with the THC. THC soft gels, ten milligrams per capsule. I've eaten seven eight of those and haven't felt anything. CBD soft gels. Now, this is what I'm curious about. If if CBD doesn't have that same kind of effects, am I feeling anything?

00;07;05;11 - 00;07;33;08

Gary Johnston

I don't know whether the CBD 50 soft gels will work or not, because whether I'll be able to tell that I actually had them. Then we had the max balance 3030 drops or glacial gold ten milligrams there, 30mg of THC, 30mg of CBD, and in near total activation it's .86 milligrams per both THC and CBD. Well, I have done.

00;07;33;11 - 00;07;33;20

Ian

Let's.

00;07;33;20 - 00;07;56;04

Gary Johnston

See. I've done six, I've done nine. I've done any number of those, at various times in my day. They haven't had an effect, I'm sorry to say. And then we move to, glacial gold balance, ten and ten soft gels. Now, I haven't opened those up because I don't think they're going to have much of an impact.

00;07;56;04 - 00;08;21;00

Gary Johnston

But. But we'll try it one day. And maybe what I'll even do is I'll try it on a day like just a normal day and see what happens with both. So I'll try to keep track of from that perspective. And then I have also full spectrum five and five soft gels. Because again, there's going to be the oil in the gel and I can probably eat a whole bunch of them and not feel anything.

00;08;21;00 - 00;08;53;14

Gary Johnston

But at some point I will get those dried and then we have the max, strength two CBC 200 drops. So again, if that kind of impact from CBD goes the same way as my THC, I'm not sure what the what the benefit is going to be. I am so thankful for cows, for bringing me all of this and knowing that he wants to have some impact and, have some impact for me.

00;08;53;16 - 00;09;18;24

Gary Johnston

Alas, my temperament, my my physiology does not deal well with edibles that it's as simple as that. I just don't do well with them. So, I'm really thankful of this. I'm going to continue to do them. I'm going to continue to use them. And if I notice any of the impact, I'll let you know. But I suspect that's not going to happen.

00;09;18;27 - 00;09;50;20

Gary Johnston

Yeah, lots of great, great products here. And thank you so much for that, guys. I'm afraid I'm going to give you the impression that I'm not really appreciative because I am appreciative. I just wish your stuff worked on me. Because. So far I haven't had anything that really works for me in any sense. Like, for example, I thought the THC soft gels at to ten milligrams per, and if I popped a bunch of those, that would be a good start on my day.

00;09;50;23 - 00;10;17;16

Gary Johnston

Let those set for an hour after eating six of them and I didn't feel anything. So that's the reality of my physiology and the way my metabolism works. I wish it were different. And, perhaps for you, all of this stuff really works. Well, I hope it does. I want to thank you so much, guys, for sending me this stuff.

00;10;17;18 - 00;10;33;28

Gary Johnston

I really appreciate it. I only wish it worked for me. I'm not it. Let me be clear. I am so thankful of for you offering the product. I just wish it was more effective for my system.

00;10;34;04 - 00;10;45;09

Ian

To see CBD to beam profiles further to me. Oh please explain to me. Go to the Google.

00;10;45;12 - 00;10;50;01

Unknown

Go to local I love you. Yeah, go to the portal.

00;10;50;01 - 00;10;52;24

Ian

Please explain this stuff to me.

00;10;53;01 - 00;11;19;00

Gary Johnston

Welcome to cultivar Corner, brought to you by Up in Smoke. It's 258 West Broadway in Vancouver and also online at It's Up and smoke.com. 00;11;19;02 - 00;11;43;14

Gary Johnston

Fabulous. Well, what we're doing today, we're going back to some where we've gone before. We introduced some smoke last time and we're going to carry on along that path, and we're going with grape Animal Shelter or let's try some let's try some concentrates, see if we can get a little bit of a buzz going on. A why not?

00;11;43;16 - 00;12;10;26

Gary Johnston

Why wouldn't I? I always enjoy that. So, we have definitely cut down on my cannabis. It's. We cut down. But that doesn't mean that I can't have a treat. That doesn't mean that I can't have a treat from something like grape animal Shelter. Yeah, delicious. So let's give you the rundown on grape animal shatter dead bonds.

00;12;10;26 - 00;12;12;29

Ian

Great great.

00;12;13;01 - 00;12;48;11

Gary Johnston

00;12;48;14 - 00;13;20;18

Gary Johnston

Dead bodies grape animal shatter 2.0 offers a perfect balance of smooth texture and bold, fruity flavor, so let's try it. So Grape Animal is the strain. The average THC is 82%. It is an indica leading hybrid. Average CBD is 3%. The average Terps 2%. Your flavor profile, berry candy, fruity grape, sugary sweet and your top terpenes are Miocene.

00;13;20;21 - 00;13;51;06

Gary Johnston

Sorry limonene, Mersin and mean. Those are going to be our our Turpin. That's what I was trying to say when I got stuck in that chirping spice, but I haven't gotten stuck on it now, so let me. And this is also interesting. So I have the proxy, the puff go proxy. I had an accident with the Bronco buff go proxy last week.

00;13;51;11 - 00;14;11;13

Gary Johnston

No, I guess it was last month. I looked in and my little glass piece of the jar for the proxy just fell on my basement floor. And, you know, the things don't do well when they fall on my basement floor. So I didn't feel like I wanted to replace that glass thing. That was another $120 to replace it.

00;14;11;16 - 00;14;19;24

Gary Johnston

So what I have done is I have got their travel pipe going on here, and there's the other side of my travel pipe.

00;14;19;24 - 00;14;22;15

Ian

Wonderful.

00;14;22;17 - 00;14;45;22

Gary Johnston

That had all gone, fallen down by the wayside. Perfect. And then we're going to get some of the, oh, there's some sticky icky. Okay. So now we're going to put it into the travel pipe. And I like that because that gives me lots of nice flavors. And, why is that not working? Let's give that a try.

00;14;45;22 - 00;14;49;19

Gary Johnston

And we put it into the travel pipe.

00;14;49;21 - 00;14;50;13

Ian

And.

00;14;50;13 - 00;15;16;17

Gary Johnston

In there okay. So we're now going to turn it on and we're going to go with want us to go for we'll go with green and let's go down there. And we're going to give it that first piece. And here we go. So this is grape animal shatter 2.0. And here's our first taste of it. And we get the proxy warmed up.

00;15;16;20 - 00;15;38;18

Gary Johnston

And it's going to do me a double bump in the middle. And once we're there it's time for us to smoke. And I love smoking. I'm really pleased to see what's going to happen with the animals. The grape animal shatter. Here's the temperature.

00;15;38;20 - 00;15;48;18

Gary Johnston

Oh, oh, there some of that grape, some of that berry, some of that fruity.

00;15;48;21 - 00;15;55;03

Ian

Oh.

00;15;55;06 - 00;15;59;28

Gary Johnston

Oh. Very sweet.

00;16;00;03 - 00;16;01;29

Ian

00;16;02;02 - 00;16;11;14

Gary Johnston

Whoa! Really nice berry candy. Fruity. Grapey. Sugary sweet.

00;16;11;16 - 00;16;17;03

Gary Johnston

Oh, and he keeps sampling.

00;16;17;05 - 00;16;35;09

Gary Johnston

The grape animal shatter at 82% THC. Oh, you to pump that up again. And let's get me back to my. And here we go.

00;16;35;12 - 00;16;43;25

Gary Johnston

So this product is available only in, Britain and British Columbia. Apparently.

00;16;43;27 - 00;16;49;00

Gary Johnston

Oh, really? Nice.

00;16;49;03 - 00;16;52;00

Ian

Now.

00;16;52;02 - 00;16;55;03

Gary Johnston

I'll be honest, I am funny and a little harsh today.

00;16;55;05 - 00;16;57;17

Ian

It's.

00;16;57;20 - 00;17;12;07

Gary Johnston

That could be simply because of the temperature I've chosen. And I'm not giving enough in between, perhaps. Oh, but my, my head is starting to feel it.

00;17;12;10 - 00;17;19;26

Gary Johnston

Oh, yeah. So there's definitely some great weakness, some fruitiness to it.

00;17;19;28 - 00;17;21;16

Ian

Oh.

00;17;21;18 - 00;17;38;21

Gary Johnston

And already am I. Endocannabinoid system. It has become immersed. Oh, well, he he has become immersed in the intoxication.

00;17;38;23 - 00;18;02;13

Gary Johnston

Oh, and nice picture on the page that I have pulled up for you to take a peek at. This is from a Sigma grow are the people who are creating this. They have done a whole kinds of shatter in the grape. Animal 2.0 is very nice. So now we're going to do we're going to pump up the temperature to the next phase.

00;18;02;16 - 00;18;14;19

Gary Johnston

And we'll go back in I get to the red and let's do one more of the red when I get some of the oh there it is.

00;18;14;22 - 00;18;21;06

Gary Johnston

My that is really, really good.

00;18;21;09 - 00;18;24;03

Ian

Oh my my my,

00;18;24;05 - 00;18;30;20

Gary Johnston

My endocannabinoid system is firing on all cylinders this morning.

00;18;30;23 - 00;18;32;26

Ian

I love that.

00;18;32;28 - 00;18;41;00

Gary Johnston

I have not done a cultivar corner on a concentrate in a long time.

00;18;41;02 - 00;19;17;25

Gary Johnston

I appreciate every nuance, every note, every subtle flavor that comes out of that box. I've got proxy with its treble pipe, which is really just some silicon that they've wrapped up. But it's doing me rather nicely. And I have to say, I am feeling, pretty high. I am loving this. Oh, I have missed, I have missed doing another cultivar corner, with a concentrate and trying to get back to it again.

00;19;18;00 - 00;19;42;03

Gary Johnston

I have cut down my cannabis consumption incredibly. It doesn't mean that I can't have some treats once in a while. And that's what we're doing now. Oh, wait, let me remind you. Cultivar Corner is brought to you by up in Smoke. It's 258 West Broadway in Vancouver and online at It's Up in smoke.com. Remember, if you are 19 years of age or older and you live in B.C., you can get Matthew to send you something via the post office.

00;19;42;10 - 00;20;01;22

Gary Johnston

Or if you live in Vancouver and you order by 2 p.m., he can get on his e-scooter and bring you the cannabis. I love that concept. And I also love, the grape shatter two point grape animal 2.0 shatter. I just.

00;20;01;22 - 00;20;06;07

Ian

Love that.

00;20;06;10 - 00;20;17;13

Gary Johnston

And now my day has been made, and I come back after a little bit, after it's rolling around in my brain for a little bit.

00;20;17;16 - 00;20;17;26

Ian

Oh.

00;20;17;26 - 00;20;39;18

Gary Johnston

My my, my, I love the way this feels on my brain. Oh. This is just lovely. Just lovely. Oh, I've got to tell you, Deb, but Deb, boards powered by stigma grow their grape animal shatter. 2.0. You may want to try some of this yourself.

00;20;39;25 - 00;20;44;20

Ian

Sharing stories about good weed while trying good weed.

00;20;44;23 - 00;21;11;29

Gary Johnston

This is the cannabis potcast, and this story we're grabbing from stretch can become. This was written by staff, according to a new survey from a recruitment agency, both genders in Canada want better pay, better hours and a more straightforward path to advance in the industry. Retail and manufacturing roles in the cannabis industry, such as bud tenders, production technicians and assistant managers, experienced modest pay increases in 2024, according to a new cannabis salary guide.

00;21;12;01 - 00;21;39;22

Gary Johnston

Despite this, many bartenders continue to earn a below a living wage in parts of the country. At the same time, other positions in the industry command much higher compensation and opportunities for career advancement. Well, the average salary for Bud tenders was $17.20 to $26 an hour. Buyers and inventory managers made 55 to $80,000 a year, and general managers made from 70 to $100,000 a year.

00;21;39;25 - 00;22;13;01

Gary Johnston

On the production side, a cannabis packager might make from about 35,000 to 65,000 a year, and the director of extraction might make from 80 to 130,000 a year, and a VP of manufacturing could make from 140 to $220,000 a year. Executive compensation remained stable during this period, while base salaries for C-level roles such as CEO, CFO and CEO ranging from 150 to 300,000, although there's also a growing use of performance based bonuses and equity as retention tools.

00;22;13;07 - 00;22;44;16

Gary Johnston

A 2025 cannabis salary guide from Toronto based recruitment agency White Ash Group, which focuses on Canada's cannabis industry, seeks to empower those working to better understand the workplace landscape. Hiring successfully in 2025 is all about alignment between compensation, culture and career path, says white House Group co-founder Graydon Wilborn. The most successful companies will be the ones that think beyond just filling roles and start building workplaces that people actually want to grow in.

00;22;44;19 - 00;23;14;19

Gary Johnston

We're seeing noticeable salary growth at the VP and director level, especially in operations at sales, which reflects the shift from startup hustle to scale stage strategy, he adds. Companies taking things seriously are investing in experienced leadership to stabilize and compete long term. The guide goes beyond just cannabis production and retail sales, including cannabis industry jobs like marketing, sales, technology, research, finance, human resources, business operations, QA, compliance and much more.

00;23;14;22 - 00;23;47;06

Gary Johnston

In addition to looking at the Canadian cannabis market, the guide also integrates information from eight different legal U.S. markets with over 2500 verified North American data points from craft and midsize companies. The guide also includes insights from the Canadian bartender community. The High Buds Club, which boasts membership from 20% of retail cannabis employees in Canada. Surveys with High Bud's broad membership shows that about half a Bud tenders earn 18 to $20 an hour, and just over half feel their pay is fair compared to other retail.

00;23;47;08 - 00;24;24;20

Gary Johnston

Despite this, more than three quarters, 77% of Bud tenders in Ontario earn below the provincial living wage of 2167 an hour. However, there are opportunities in the space. Over half of surveyed Bud tenders received a razor promotion in the past year, although some employees feel it could be difficult to advance beyond the retail space, according to Hi Buds, although many bud tenders feel they are underpaid, members rate their job satisfaction at 7.4 out of ten most Bud tenders, 62% also say they feel they have influence on most sales in their store, emphasizing their importance in the supply chain from their perspective.

00;24;24;20 - 00;24;43;29

Gary Johnston

Despite many struggling to earn a living. We are experts in our field. We must know product knowledge and pride ourselves in knowledge and customer service, said one. Another. Was Bud Tender? I feel like we aren't recognized enough for what we do. We're left scraping for pennies, living paycheck to paycheck, while others in the field, less demanding than ours, make more of a living.

00;24;44;01 - 00;25;04;08

Gary Johnston

Making a minimum wage than is insulting. It's left me second guessing it being a bud tender is something I really want to do. I feel like there's no growth in this industry and we make companies big dollars. Well, every bud tender I've talked to is struggling despite these frustrations, many respondents also shared that they were motivated by their love and passion for the plant.

00;25;04;15 - 00;25;34;23

Gary Johnston

I love sharing my passion for cannabis with other like minded individuals, said another. I'm still blown away that it is legalized and I'm honored to be a part of the growing industry. Diversity, equity and inclusion continue to also be a focus of the cannabis industry in Canada, even as priorities shift in other parts of the world. Organizations like the Seed initiative, the B.C. Indigenous Cannabis Business Fund, and the Ontario Cannabis Store all have initiatives seeking to empower a more diverse cannabis industry in Canada.

00;25;34;25 - 00;25;43;14

And we are picking this story up from Strat Connect. Com and let's talk about what we have found. Ontario has now removed the requirement that says cannabis stores cannot have cannabis or cannabis accessories visible from the exterior of the premises. The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario. The Agco sent a notice to retailers confirming the rule change on May 23rd, following an announcement on May 15th.

The change removes Ontario Standard 2.5 from the Registrar of Standards for Cannabis Retail Stores, eliminating the registration requirement that cannabis and accessories not be visible from the exterior of the premises. The Agco says the change is indeed to support cannabis retailers by fostering a more welcoming environment and creating store safety, while continuing to protect youth from exposure to cannabis.

Retailers have been calling for changes to the rules, saying it leaves cannabis stores more vulnerable to criminals. The provincial agency also says that removing this requirement means the Agco can focus its compliance and enforcement efforts on other risk areas, contributing to a safer and more sustainable cannabis retail landscape. Jess Samra, the owner and founder of Sativa Bliss Cannabis, with five locations in Ontario, has been lobbying for such changes and expressed approval in a social media post.

A big thank you to everyone who helped advocate for removing the window coverings. This is a huge step for cannabis retailers. We no longer have to operate in the shadows. Thank you to everyone of the government that listened and put aside their biases and fears to stand up for employee safety and let cannabis stores operate to the public.

Just like all other businesses. Tom Luzinski, the owner of Uptown Herb with two locations in Ontario, one in Grand Bend and one other in Waterloo. Shannon Samaras enthusiasm and would like to see the Agco now also remove the provincial requirement to check customers IDs upon entrance to the store. I really think it's a great step forward, says Luzinski, noting that he had planned for such changes by installing movable window blinds in his Grand Bend location, rather than the adhesive coverings he used at his Waterloo location.

I already instructed my staff in Grand Bend to roll up the windows, he adds. Although the removal of the covering of the Waterloo location may take a little bit longer, it's not too big of a deal, but obviously it's a waste of money. I think the bud tender security and staff security are going to be a lot better.

00;28;09;02 - 00;28;29;11

It's going to be more welcoming and inviting. Customers won't think of this as an illegal store. I think it's definitely a great decision on their part. Rajasthani, the president at Piercing Tim's Cannabis, which has stores in Brampton, Kitchener and Milton, says the change is an affirmation for him since he already removed window coverings in his stores during a robbery in January.

00;28;29;19 - 00;29;00;12

It's a win in the right direction, he says. There were still a lot of things the Agco needs to do on our behalf, but this is one step closer to some of the changes retailers want to see. I think there's also shows retailers can be more vigilant and take certain things into their own hands before Agco even makes the choice, then deregulation state this will hibito to promote cannabis, a cannabis accessory or a service related to cannabis in such a manner that the promotion may be audible or visible from outside a place where young persons are not permitted by law.

The Atco, however, has maintained that window coverings were not a requirement. Ontario as long as stores found another way to adhere to the federal rule. Today's announcement goes several steps further than the other provinces. By moving beyond removing window coverings and toward rejecting these federal requirements, and that some good news from the Agco and Ontario, they have made big changes.

And we'll do one more to finish up the day. How do you make an artichoke? You strangle it. How was the snow globe feeling after the storm? A little shaken.
