What a perfect time for me to welcome you to the Cannabis potcast. Thank you for coming by. Maybe this is your very first time you haven't been here before. I'm especially excited about that. For the next 30 minutes or so, we're going to spend a whole lot of information on cannabis. It's a plant I'm a little passionate about.
00;00;37;15 - 00;01;02;04
Gary Johnston
Now, before we get too much further, let me remind you this podcast is intended for those of legal consumption age in your jurisdiction and is intended purely for entertainment and perhaps educational purposes. You should always consume your cannabis responsibly. Well, in episode 209, we look at where you can smoke weed around the world. Cannabis can make your heart race, and we clear up some common misconceptions about cannabis.
00;01;02;12 - 00;01;29;19
Gary Johnston
On Cultivar Corner, brought to you by Up in Smoke. We sampled the Legacy Legends Multi-Pack, which has samples of Everybody Smoker Farms, Royal Harvest, Raj World, Remo and then we mixed them all together for the combination of all the strains in unity. All of that and more on episode 209 of the Cannabis potcast.
00;01;29;22 - 00;01;57;25
Gary Johnston
I want to thank you so much for being here as a listener of the Cannabis potcast. I'm so pleased to know that you're here. I also want to thank my patrons Tony, Rob, Gage, Lloyd, Roger, Justin, and Lindy. One more week, but thank you so much for your support. I truly appreciate it. And if you like what you hear and you feel so inclined, you can go to buy me a coffee.com/cannabis potcast and you can buy me a doobie.
00;01;58;01 - 00;02;19;14
Gary Johnston
And let me give you the details that I was told by Tony, who's a listener of the show. Tony, as you know, has been on a round the world trip. He's called all kinds of places. So where has he been? He's in Lake Malawi. He's been here for the last few days. He came from Zambia and he met his local friend.
00;02;19;16 - 00;02;42;07
Gary Johnston
His name is Andrew, and he found his interest in cannabis. And he introduced him to a local strain, a Malawi gold. He wanted to be discreet, so he asked him to bake it in an edible for him. And a couple hours later he came back with a spice cake. The aroma is slightly sweet, but not overpowering. There's no icing used in this recipe, and I'm taking my first bite now.
00;02;42;09 - 00;03;03;06
Gary Johnston
It's still slightly warm and oaky after a few minutes of chewing. It's a noticeable sweet flavor, which would make it better as a dessert bun instead of a sandwich. Okay, second bite, he's going to come back and describe how the effects are in about an hour. So here they are again Gary. Now it's been approximately an hour. I'm still in Malawi and still at Lake Malawi.
00;03;03;14 - 00;03;23;13
Gary Johnston
So the effects have started. Malawi gold is definitely a strong sativa because I ate it as an edible. I wasn't able to identify any beans. I'm getting a good head high and feeling very happy and traveling in Africa. The high does come on strong and that may be due to me having two bites. So there you have it, Gary.
00;03;23;13 - 00;03;47;06
Gary Johnston
That was his cultivar corner review a Malawi gold in edible form and I wished it worked for me like that. Tony, I truly do. Thank you so much for sharing that though I'm sure everybody will get a kick out of that. Now let's get to our first story and we pick up this story from 420 in Telkom. And it's the top four misconceptions about cannabis.
00;03;47;09 - 00;04;10;27
Gary Johnston
The federal government dithers and spreads misinformation. So here are some facts about cannabis. The federal government is still debating cannabis despite 88% of the country wanting it. Legal and major medical and science institutes acknowledging it has health benefits. But some old guard remnants of the war on drugs espouse outdated information, which doesn't acknowledge the medical benefits of cannabis.
00;04;10;29 - 00;04;43;27
Gary Johnston
Gen Z is the first generation to seriously begin moving away from alcohol and using more cannabis. It's up to everyone to understand the issue. And here are the top four misconceptions about cannabis. Cannabis has no medical benefit. A persistent myth is cannabis offers no legitimate medical use. In reality, scientific studies and patient reports have shown cannabis can help manage chronic pain, reduce anxiety, control chemotherapy, induce nausea, and ease symptoms of conditions like multiple sclerosis and epilepsy.
00;04;43;29 - 00;05;10;02
Gary Johnston
The FDA has even approved certain cannabinoid based medications for specific conditions, highlighting its therapeutic potential. Though it's not a cure all and effectiveness varies by individual and illness. Cannabis is harmless, like alcohol, tobacco, and sugar. There are some risks with marijuana. There has been no cases of a fatal overdose, unlike some substances, and it causes significantly less body damage.
00;05;10;04 - 00;05;34;14
Gary Johnston
But excessive use, especially among adolescents, can impact memory. Academic performance, and mental health. Cannabis smoke may contain many of the harmful chemicals as tobacco, posing risks to lung health. Responsible use and honest educators are crucial. Less hangovers, less weight gain and moderate use have been part of the trend of California sober, where people have given up alcohol for marijuana.
00;05;34;16 - 00;06;07;25
Gary Johnston
All cannabis get you high. Many assume all cannabis products cause psychoactive effects. However, cannabis contains over 100 cannabinoids, with THC responsible for the high CBD. Another major compound does not produce intoxication and is used for its therapeutic benefits such as reducing seizures and anxiety. This distinction is vital for understanding medical cannabis options. Cannabis is a gateway drug. The idea that cannabis use inevitably leads to harder drug use has been widely debunked.
00;06;07;27 - 00;06;37;15
Gary Johnston
Research does not support a direct causal link between cannabis and subsequent illicit drug use. In fact, some studies suggest medical cannabis can help reduce reliance on more dangerous substances such as prescription opioids. By separating fact from fiction. We could better appreciate cannabis as potential benefits while acknowledging its risks. Accurate information empowers individuals to make informed decisions and supports a balanced public conversation about cannabis as role in society.
00;06;37;17 - 00;06;44;13

And that was a good story from the Mercury News. Thanks to for 20 intel.com.

For the cannabis infused studio in the clouds, this is the cannabis potcast story.
00;06;49;05 - 00;07;20;10

We're going to consumer.com. They are back up in business and they're talking about something that may make your heart race. One of the most common unwanted side effects of cannabis. A spike in heart rate also happens to be one of the most troublesome, and could even turn new users off from the plant. If you don't explain that, it's possible you can have a little acceleration of the heart for maybe 5 or 10 minutes, and there is nothing to worry about, said Janice Kratz, MD, on the Cannabis Enigma podcast.
00;07;20;12 - 00;07;40;23
Gary Johnston
He gets nervous and says, Oh God, why did I take this drug? For a healthy individual, cannabis induced tachycardia is usually harmless. And knowing more about what cannabis is doing to your body can make you feel better about the unpleasant feeling. So why can cannabis raise your heart rate? Is it dangerous? And what can you do about it?
00;07;40;25 - 00;08;05;00
Gary Johnston
Let's find out. Cannabis has a number of common side effects, ranging from mild ones such as red eyes, dry mouth, or the munchies, to potentially more unpleasant effects such as anxiety, paranoia, and short term memory difficulties. These side effects and how cannabis affects the cardiovascular system, are related to how it modulates what is known as the endocannabinoid system.
00;08;05;02 - 00;08;43;12
Gary Johnston
The endocannabinoid system affects a wide range of bodily functions, including hunger, pain, sleep, and energy, to name a few. The major active chemicals in cannabis, cannabinoids, are able to trigger receptors that control the endocannabinoid system, modifying the function of those receptors and the connected systems, including the cardiovascular system. The interactions of the endocannabinoid system with the autonomic nervous system seem to be the driving force behind the reported cardiovascular adverse effects from cannabis, wrote a group of researchers who recently reviewed years of cannabis studies.
00;08;43;15 - 00;09;12;16
Gary Johnston
An increased or irregular heart rate, also known as tachycardia, can be a side effect of cannabis use. In fact, smoking cannabis can lead to a 20 to 100% increase in heart rate for a couple of hours or more after consumption. This is believed to be due to a widening of the blood vessels, which is also responsible for those red eyes people get after using cannabis in higher doses, cannabis could also lead to a drop in blood pressure, resulting in dizziness and lightheadedness.
00;09;12;18 - 00;09;48;06
Gary Johnston
The main culprit for these effects of cannabis is widely considered to be tetrahydrocannabinol, the cannabinoid also responsible for the high of marijuana. Often, the more oft cited, albeit dated, reports state that inhaling cannabis smoke and ingesting THC reliably increases the heart rate by 20 to 50% over baseline. A lab study carried out on rodents in 1985 further showed the THC significantly alters the levels of catecholamines, hormones that are produced by the adrenal glands, and are responsible for the body's fight or flight response in the bloodstream.
00;09;48;08 - 00;10;17;20
Gary Johnston
Research has also shown that as one's tolerance to cannabis increases, the severity of side effects often decreases. This means that side effects commonly seen with inhaled cannabis, including increased heart rates and reduced blood pressure, is not as common in regular users. It should be noted that almost all studies of the risks of cannabis use are based on people who inhaled marijuana smoke, and that with more and more people now performing other methods and types of cannabis, these risk assessments should be updated.
00;10;17;23 - 00;10;42;26
Gary Johnston
In other words, like with some other cannabis side effect, the effect on heart rate can be partly attributed to the act of smoking itself. Since THC is often cited as being responsible for the increased heart rate after cannabis use. One might logically conclude that choosing lower THC strains, or lower doses in general, would help mitigate it. It would also follow that eating edibles high in THC could produce the same side effects.
00;10;42;29 - 00;11;21;00
Gary Johnston
Doctor Deepak D'Souza, a professor of psychiatry at the Yale University of Medicine, told NBC News in November of 2020 that he has spent 25 years studying the effects of marijuana and THC, and that in our studies on THC, we found a very robust increase in heart rate and an effect on blood pressure that can be quite profound. A 1988 trial found that women, given very low THC, 1 to 8%, showed statistically significant increases in pulse rate, and this increase was more pronounced and lasted longer for participants with a past history of intermittent marijuana use.
00;11;21;03 - 00;11;45;07
Gary Johnston
The most well known and common strains, or more correctly referred to as chemo bars, are high in THC and low in cannabidiol, and other bread for a strong, high and medicinal effect are increasingly referred to as type one cannabis. Type two chemo bars have more of a balance between CBD and THC, while type three chemo bars are CBD dependent with little to no THC.
00;11;45;09 - 00;12;15;12
Gary Johnston
All types of cannabis can be used therapeutically, but types two and three tend to allow for better control of THC doses and are often preferred by health care professionals due to the reduced risk of side effects. Type three cannabis. Despite containing small amounts of THC, is generally considered non intoxicating. It's conventional wisdom in cannabis that sativa strains are upbeat, and indica strains are mellow and likely to induce the cult like sensation.
00;12;15;15 - 00;12;39;06
Gary Johnston
Countless cannabis consumers use these characterizations to shape their consumption and purchasing decisions. Unfortunately, there isn't much scientific evidence to support this notion of indica versus sativa as a method of distinguishing between the effects of different types of cannabis. Well, there are many factors at play in determining why a cannabis chemo bar produces certain effects. Calling them indica or sativa is not one.
00;12;39;09 - 00;13;02;08
Gary Johnston
What does matter is the cannabinoid profile of the chemo bar. How much the THC, CBD and other cannabinoids and it terpene make up. The various terpenes in cannabis not only determine its flavor and aroma, but may also have a big impact on its effects, including how energetic or sedative the high is. Also, it's worth keeping in mind that this can be very individualistic.
00;13;02;10 - 00;13;25;24
Gary Johnston
The right dose for one individual can be very different than the right dose for another person, and a strain that makes one person very upbeat and giggly could induce a coach like sensation for someone else. And while a specific strain may be very relaxing to one person, another user could experience anxiety or paranoia, but this would not indicate that this is a universally experienced effect of the cannabis variety in question.
00;13;25;26 - 00;13;42;12
Gary Johnston
The same could be true for increased heart rate in general. If you're considering using cannabis, you may want to speak to your physician about the possible side effects, especially if you have a history of cardiovascular issues, and we'll leave it there from information for you to make a better decision.
00;13;42;15 - 00;13;53;19

Welcome to Cultivar Corner. Brought to you by Up in Smoke at 258 West Broadway, New Vancouver. And online at it's Up in smoke.com. Remember, if you live in B.C. and you are 19 years of age or older. Check them out today and you can have something sent to you today. And guess what the what we are dealing today.
00;14;21;03 - 00;14;48;17
Gary Johnston
The legacy legend L.T. yo a bunch of pre-rolls from the Legend Legacy Legends that's on their menu today. You can have it sent to you as well. If you're looking for a souvenir. And in addition to that, if you order before 2 p.m. and you live in Vancouver, they'll make delivery via their e-scooter. That's pretty cool. So now let's talk about what we're doing today.
00;14;48;20 - 00;15;25;27
Gary Johnston
This is legacy legend El Tito. So we've heard about these legends these legacy legends for a while. And what they've done is they have collected them all together. So let's talk about them. So the legends, Rohan Gardiner from Rod World, Jeff Osborne from Smoker Farms, Kevin Varner from Royal Harvest and Remo Cooler Santi from Remo have all been doing their weed and doing it very well.
00;15;26;03 - 00;15;54;09
Gary Johnston
So they have collected this pack. I have two pre-rolls or two packages in each of these growers names. There's two, so I have two half grams of smoker farms, two of royal Harvest, and the same thing with Raj World and Remo. But because they've collected them all. And so there's also one pack that is a little mix of everything.
00;15;54;11 - 00;16;29;06
Gary Johnston
So guess what. That's what we're doing on Cultivar Quarter. We're doing the cultivar that is a mix of smoker farms, Royal City, Reno and Rohan. Those are the mixes and that's what we've got. Now, let me be clear on this. There are no turbines or any other details. There's not a lot of detail on the on the, the wrapper, shall we say.
00;16;29;08 - 00;16;55;16
Gary Johnston
So the remo by just so you know what we've got. So the Remo is a cherry runts. Raj world is rockstar smoker farms. Not surprisingly a master Kush ultra and Royal Harvest is frosted fruitcake. And so the legends unity. That's what we're going to do. We're doing unity. I have no idea what kind of terpenes there are. I can't tell you that.
00;16;55;16 - 00;17;21;26
Gary Johnston
It is 25.3% THC is what the unity is. And I'm also excited to say we're doing another cultivar corner with weed. Yes, yes, yes I know, I know, we've changed somewhat, but I thought it was time to kind of get back to where we were before the things are growing better, things are doing well, and it's time to to smoke a little weed and let's see what happens.
00;17;21;28 - 00;17;35;17
Gary Johnston
So this is unity from the legacy legends, and let's give it a try.
00;17;35;19 - 00;17;44;17
Gary Johnston
Oh, nice and smooth. I'm pleased to say that that first toke felt really good.
00;17;44;20 - 00;18;06;17
Gary Johnston
Can I pick up any taste out of this? Not really. So I can pretend that I'm picking up some taste, but I'm not. So I have no idea what kind of turnips are here. 25.3% is the THC. And let's see what this does.
00;18;06;19 - 00;18;39;16
Gary Johnston
I have been enjoying the way Cultivar Corner has been going live, doing the edibles and all of those things lately, but it's time to kind of bring it back to where it originally was. And that is Cultivar Corner smoking weed. Always my favorite time of the day. My favorite time of what we're doing. We're still doing it. I've cut down a whole lot, but that doesn't mean we can't bring up some weed and enjoy the experience.
00;18;39;19 - 00;19;07;10
Gary Johnston
Oh, there's a nice, nice, smooth. Oh, that's very nice. It doesn't have a lot of taste. So if you mixed in the Cherry Runts, the Rockstar Master Kush Ultra and the frosted fruitcake, you would have unity, which is kind of where we are today. This is pretty cool.
00;19;07;13 - 00;19;32;16
Gary Johnston
Now, I'm hoping you're getting yourself your pack of the Legacy Legends, and then we'll have a couple of times where we can enjoy the experience in various times. Of course, I got two half grams out of each of these. So from smoker farms, from Kevin, from Royal Harvest, from Raj World and Remo. I have two of each of their joint.
00;19;32;19 - 00;19;47;00
Gary Johnston
And in the unity, it's ready to go. And it's working really nicely. So far I've had a nice big, enduring the experience.
00;19;47;02 - 00;20;03;28
Gary Johnston
It hasn't gone a long ways on my joint, so I've been doing it for a while and I don't know. We're about a quarter of an inch gone off of that, so that's kind of nice.
00;20;04;00 - 00;20;19;07
Gary Johnston
I'm hoping for a real nice. Now, again, they're not telling me, indica. They're not telling me sativa. They're just telling me weed. And it feels good to be smoking weed again.
00;20;19;09 - 00;20;55;09
Gary Johnston
It does. It really does. What else can I tell you about this one? Again? I have no turbines. Here's the details from the menu item, and it's up in smoke. The collector's legend has landed. That's right. The Legacy Legends Direct delivery pack has landed here and up in smoke. Boasting flower grown and curated by Rohan Raj World, Kevin Royal Harvest, Jeff Smoker's Farm and Remo Neem Remnant merchants.
00;20;55;11 - 00;21;16;27
Gary Johnston
They make the ultimate mix pack. You get two joints of each legend and finish with a unity mix, a mix of all four flowers rolled into one. This is a limited, limited, limited. We only bought 12. We took one for ourselves. It's a collector's item after all. Get yours while supplies last. It's available on the it's Up in Smoke menu.
00;21;17;00 - 00;21;37;27
Gary Johnston
You can pick it up today. And again both of our corner brought to you by It's Up in Smoke at 258 West Broadway in Vancouver and online at It's Up in Smoke, where if you're 19 years of age or older and you live in BC, you can have something sent to you. And if you live in Vancouver and you order before 2 p.m., you can have it sent to you by your e-scooter.
00;21;37;29 - 00;22;11;04
Gary Johnston
All of the great ways to get your cannabis. This has been a hoot so far. Oh, apparently I was speaking so much there that the joint went out. And I lost my rhythm. It's been a good rhythm, I have to say. Yeah, this is really nice. So right now I'm got some happy eyes going on. I'm feeling a little bit of that euphoria that's happening.
00;22;11;06 - 00;22;32;12
Gary Johnston
Oh, there's some more of that euphoria. Oh, really? A really a smooth taste. I can't tell you any particular taste because I'm not picking up anything that's going to speak to me. But the unity is a very nice joint. I'm really happy about it.
00;22;32;15 - 00;23;05;19
Gary Johnston
Oh, yeah. There's those happy eyes. I've been waiting a long time. I truly have. I have missed those days when I meet my old friend, Happy Eyes. Things are going well. Things are getting better. We decided to do another cultivar corner with some weed, and we're doing legacy legends of the LTO. Two joints from every grower.
00;23;05;22 - 00;23;10;26
Gary Johnston
And then we mix it all up with the unity.
00;23;10;28 - 00;23;44;16
Gary Johnston
Oh, that's really nice. Okay. I can actually say we have achieved high, high? No, really, we have achieved high. Oh. My, oh. I love those smiles that come out of my head when I feel those bursts of euphoria running around my brain, and I feel that THC hitting my CB1 receptors and blowing through my brain.
00;23;44;18 - 00;24;11;20
Gary Johnston
Oh, this is feeling really good. I haven't been this high in on a joint for a while, and I'm pretty happy about it. Now, I'm also excited about what I'm going to find from each of the individuals, because always liked Jeff Smoker Farms. Some of their Master Kush Ultra, the frosted fruit cake from Kevin Varner, the Cherry runts from Reno and rock star from Raj World.
00;24;11;21 - 00;24;21;19
Gary Johnston
I'm looking forward to doing each of those over the next few days. You may not have to experience it, but I. But I will.
00;24;21;21 - 00;24;59;16
Gary Johnston
Oh yes. I have realized that this was nice to get back to. I'm so glad we went back to where we originally started with working with weed. So that's it. That is the Legacy Legends LTO. Available at Up in Smoke and a number of other stories as well. Go get yourself a pack and go live some legacy. And I have to say, in typical fashion, as Jerry finishes the joint on Cultivar Corner and he continues to revel in the AC is it works through my CB1 receptors.
00;24;59;19 - 00;25;25;10
Gary Johnston
Maybe throw in a couple of CB twos as well. I am feeling really good today. I'm happy to be back to the weed and not too much. Of course not. Not doing. Doing too much. I'm gonna do myself a favor. But boy am I enjoying the way this weed feels. Legacy. Legends. You guys are all so good at what you do.
00;25;25;12 - 00;25;28;18
Gary Johnston
And I'm going to enjoy everything you do.
00;25;28;20 - 00;25;33;15
Ian
Sharing stories about good weed while trying good weed.
00;25;33;18 - 00;25;58;02
Gary Johnston
This is the cannabis potcast. So we picked this story up from Nature and bloom.com. And it's all about the top 20 countries where weed is legal in 2025. Did you know some 200 million people around the world use weed on the regular? Around 2.5% of the world's population enjoys getting high. And more countries are embracing medical and recreational cannabis use.
00;25;58;04 - 00;26;22;01
Gary Johnston
But you can't exactly use pot wherever you please around the planet. We'll look at countries where you're free to consume cannabis, so you know where you can use weed without legal trouble, and what countries to steer clear of completely when it comes to cannabis possession. Uruguay and Canada are the first countries to have fully legalized recreational marijuana. There are still countries where cannabis use is heavily restricted.
00;26;22;03 - 00;26;54;29
Gary Johnston
Laws even goes as far as sentencing people to death in some cases. I don't think I want to go smoking. Anybody there? Approximately 30 countries have passed some kind of medical cannabis legislation, but recreational laws remain more strict. And there's a huge trend toward partial legalization of weed in most parts of the world. Number one Canada. With the passing of the Cannabis Act in 2018, weed in Canada became legal for medicinal and recreational use after almost a century of prohibition.
00;26;55;01 - 00;27;20;24
Gary Johnston
Canada first allowed the medicinal use of marijuana with the access to cannabis for medical purposes. Regulations that went into effect in 2001. The recreational use of weed in Canada, meaning growing it in your home, carrying it, and selling it, wasn't fully embraced in the Great White North until 2018, and since then, however, personal possession, the ability to purchase cannabis legally, and cultivation have been legal.
00;27;20;27 - 00;27;49;12
Gary Johnston
Thailand. While medical marijuana laws in Thailand took effect in 2018, weed is completely legal in Thailand. As of June 2022, while some regulations are still in place, cannabis is widely used and available. There is no restriction on personal possession limits, how many plants you can cultivate or how much weed you can buy. There are dispensaries literally everywhere, but we can be expensive, like up to $25 per gram for some dank, exotic strains.
00;27;49;14 - 00;28;19;26
Gary Johnston
Three Argentina In 2020, a presidential decree expanded previous cannabis laws in Argentina to allow for the cultivation and personal use of cannabis for the therapeutic, medicinal or palliative purposes. Recreational use of marijuana remains prohibited for Mexico. Medical and scientific use of weed in Mexico has been legalized in 2016. Personal use of pot was decriminalized in 2021, but you'll need a permit from the US, a federal health secretariat.
00;28;19;28 - 00;28;43;11
