Gary Johnston

Pop up.

00;02;07;18 - 00;02;09;19

Gary Johnston

I have to admit I was.

00;02;09;19 - 00;02;11;27

Gary Johnston

Really ticked off.

00;02;12;00 - 00;02;47;09

Gary Johnston

This story is so representative to me of the fact that politicians, especially in this province, that do not understand the cannabis industry, don't care about the cannabis industry and therefore blame everything on the cannabis industry. You'll get my point. This is a story from DragonCon. This is written by David Brown, a recently reelected B.C. MLA, is raising eyebrows with the province's legal cannabis industry following a recent comments she made on social media platform X that said cannabis legalization is fueling the illicit market.

00;02;47;11 - 00;03;13;04

Gary Johnston

Eleanor Sturckow, who was just reelected as the representative for the riding of Surrey South and BC's recent election, made the comment on October 29th, the same day the RCMP announced the seizure of a large quantity of cannabis and cannabis products from two unlicensed stores on Vancouver Island. Serco was previously elected under the B.C. United banner. Great work by police, confiscating drugs, marketing to kids, Roadster Co and ex.

00;03;13;07 - 00;03;37;12

Gary Johnston

More proof that legalization does not eradicate the illicit market, but instead fuels more drugs and crime. Neither Serco nor the B.C. conservatives replied to a request for comment on the issue, or if the party itself is supportive of the province's legal cannabis industry as of press time. Stokoe is a former Surrey RCMP officer. Circle was first elected to the riding of Surrey Self in September of 2022 of Surrey.

00;03;37;12 - 00;04;10;22

Gary Johnston

The second largest municipality in B.C. after Vancouver and 11th in Canada, has a traditionally socially conservative voting base. The city itself only recently began the process of allowing companies to apply for a handful of cannabis store licenses. One of the last prohibition era holdouts in a region that has otherwise embraced cannabis legalization, the issue highlights one of the challenges facing the cannabis industry in B.C., where a large portion of the voting public is, at best uninterested in industry concerns, if not outright hostile or dismissive to them.

00;04;10;24 - 00;04;38;25

Gary Johnston

Corey Waldron, who has been a guest on the Cannabis potcast in the past, the owner of Mood Cannabis, a cannabis retailer. Nanaimo, B.C., and president of the Licensed Retail Cannabis Council, ABC, says he thinks the MLA misunderstands the issue. It's disappointing to see that, says Waldron. Whether this is in B.C. or in the other problems, the intention of legalization was to create a safe and regulated product and keep it out of the hands of youth by rating illicit operators.

00;04;38;26 - 00;05;01;09

Gary Johnston

Really, what they're trying to do is take away that unregulated product that has shown time and time again, to be untested and have toxic ingredients. The comments, he says, reflect a broader issue in B.C. politics, where neither major party seems to be listening to the concerns of the legal industry. The industry is at a critical point, he explained, in terms of the sustainability of legalization.

00;05;01;12 - 00;05;21;29

Gary Johnston

Companies are facing considerable challenges and not getting support from the government, be it provincial or federal. I think both parties in B.C., the conservatives and NDP, for the most part, don't really want to deal with the problems that we're seeing in B.C., not only as retailers but at the producer level as well. The file is kind of treated like the bad kid in the corner.

00;05;22;01 - 00;05;49;02

Gary Johnston

We're forgotten. Walker Paton from the B.C. Cannabis Alliance, representing cannabis producers in B.C., especially craft producers, shared a similar sentiment. Frankly, it's disappointing that until Strach can statements like these make me wonder if our policymakers are completely unfamiliar with how our industry works. The popularity of unregulated edibles is evidence that we need better regulations, not proof that legalization fuels more crime.

00;05;49;04 - 00;06;16;14

Gary Johnston

Or maybe I'm being naive and taking a comment like that at face value. When the elected in 2020 recall replaced B.C. NDP MLA mike starchy, who served as MLA for Surrey Cloverdale from 2020 to 22. Before that time, Star Trek was a member of Surrey City Council and in 2018 he came out in support of cannabis legalization. Noting his municipal party, Surrey First had a plan for a limited cannabis retail in the city rather than an outright ban.

00;06;16;16 - 00;06;37;11

Gary Johnston

The ridings in B.C. like Surrey, Cloverdale are often dominated by more socially conservative politics, which highlights one of the challenges the legal industry faces in the province. The provincial government under the B.C. NDP has for years now been largely unresponsive to many industry concerns regarding provincial regulations for policies and their impact on the health of the legal cannabis sector in the province.

00;06;37;14 - 00;06;56;16

Gary Johnston

With an opposition apparently still stuck in the land of reefer madness and a voting public that appears to support this sentiment, there is little incentive for the B.C. NDP government to listen. MLA circles comments shouldn't be surprising, but instead should serve as another healthy reminder of how much further the industry has to go to shift this narrative among voters.

00;06;56;18 - 00;07;15;00

Gary Johnston

Even six years into legalization. There are still many who outright oppose the legal industry, or at the very least, don't prioritize the industry's concerns. And is that true? And now you have a pretty good idea of why I put the title on this episode of cannabis. Stigma is still strong.

00;07;15;02 - 00;07;19;04

Ian

For the cannabis infused studio In the clouds, this is the cannabis potcast.

00;07;19;05 - 00;07;26;16

Gary Johnston

With me today is Rosanna Bertrand, who is with Heti Deb Supply. Rosanna, welcome to the Cannabis potcast.

00;07;26;18 - 00;07;28;17

Rosanna Bertrand

Thank you for having me. It's appreciated.

00;07;28;20 - 00;07;31;20

Gary Johnston

So tell me about your cannabis story. Where did it all start for you?

00;07;31;21 - 00;07;57;00

Rosanna Bertrand

Yes. So basically we had a dev supply. We are two consultants. Me and Carl Philipp are behind all these events, and, all our website and our company. And we are to, specialists in solvents extraction. Extraction, more specifically, solving this. And, basically, we started this off just offering consultation services with the equipment that we sell and a kind of turnkey package, if I could say.

00;07;57;03 - 00;08;19;10

Rosanna Bertrand

And we are located in Quebec. So we saw the lack of events that were happening, the lack of promotion that could be done for the companies that are based in Quebec, more specifically. So we started off, we did our first event that was in Montreal. It was in the Asia lounge. We had great processors. I was there and producers too, and honestly, it was really a fantastic event.

00;08;19;10 - 00;08;39;21

Rosanna Bertrand

So we said, let's do this in Toronto, let's see this in other cities. And that's where we started doing, a little bit more events. We did our first big one, if I could, to say like that. That was in Toronto May 2015. And after that we went on 710. We did one in Ottawa. We came back in Montreal and did another one, and it was a kind of mystery.

00;08;39;21 - 00;09;01;01

Rosanna Bertrand

Everyone was gathered around a big piece of meat and, everyone could feast out and smoke. Also, it was really, really awesome. It was outdoors so we could, we were able to enjoy the sun. So, and afterwards we got a lot of demand for Vancouver. So we we're now at our sixth event that we're doing this Vancouver, in November 21st.

00;09;01;04 - 00;09;18;04

Rosanna Bertrand

So, I mean, yeah, it's really to help the market right now and bring the brands forward, especially those that not necessarily go to events or don't necessarily post online or, you know, have a lot of, people, you know, shadowing them on stuff like that on Instagram.

00;09;18;06 - 00;09;30;02

Gary Johnston

So let's get into what's happening on the 21st. And so this is the West Coast industry networking and expo, and give us a sense of what's it because I know it's starting in the morning and I think it's going through into the night time too. Right.

00;09;30;04 - 00;09;53;05

Rosanna Bertrand

Exactly. So basically we have our first part of the event that is a networking part. So it's really industry focused networking event from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.. And afterwards, we have a small break from 430 to 7 p.m.. So people can enjoy at first the 420. And after that we're starting the expo, which is open to consumers.

00;09;53;05 - 00;10;04;18

Rosanna Bertrand

So if you have a friend that's interested in just learning more, they're also welcome. And that is is basically from 7 to 10 p.m.. So people of course can enjoy the 710, during the night.

00;10;04;21 - 00;10;13;05

Gary Johnston

So what happens during that? That portion of the expo from, from 7 to 10 consumers are allowed. So you can buy a ticket for it and you have to have a ticket, right?

00;10;13;06 - 00;10;35;09

Rosanna Bertrand

Exactly. Yeah. So it's a private event. Only people that buy tickets can be there. And, basically was in for the expo. It's really kind of the, showcasing of either products or services, and people can walk around and discuss and get to see the faces behind the products that are on the market right now. And, you know, people to do some great connections.

00;10;35;11 - 00;10;43;09

Gary Johnston

And it looks like you got just a ton of people that are that are going to be there. Give us a sense of some of the some of the people that we can see when we're there was. Absolutely.

00;10;43;09 - 00;11;00;12

Rosanna Bertrand

So we have a few. We have heritage that is on board. So rad provider. We have a few of them. We also have Apothecary Botanicals with also in November rain and we oh gosh, I'm there getting out of my head here. Let me.

00;11;00;12 - 00;11;02;25

Gary Johnston

Just you don't have a cheat sheet that you can like.

00;11;02;25 - 00;11;21;23

Rosanna Bertrand

I that's what I'm doing. We have, smile brands. That is Sweet Tooth, which, these are actually one of in their first events that they're doing as Sweet tooth and not smile brands. We are also teaming up with. How about this event? And, she, Brittany is going to host these bars that are going to be there.

00;11;21;25 - 00;11;44;18

Rosanna Bertrand

So we have a curated bar menu with products from Rosebud Cannabis Farms. We're going to have some products from nugs, tribal. We're going to have a lot of great products sponsored with glass from Gibson Glassworks and also sponsored by True Quartz. A lot of great people, honestly. And, also a few people from Ganji are going to be there.

00;11;44;26 - 00;11;56;02

Rosanna Bertrand

So really, really glad to be able to welcome them also. And all that is going to be at the New Amsterdam Cafe in downtown, very accessible and just stoked to be able to welcome everyone there.

00;11;56;05 - 00;12;07;15

Gary Johnston

I think that is so cool that these events are starting to happen. I'd like to see some of them happening outside of Vancouver, because some of us aren't in Vancouver, but but I'm sure that will come. So you say this is your sixth of your seventh event that you've.

00;12;07;15 - 00;12;08;23

Rosanna Bertrand

Done six event. Yeah.

00;12;08;25 - 00;12;15;17

Gary Johnston

So it's you that's organizing it. From Hetty Deb Supply, and then everybody else is just climbing on board.

00;12;15;17 - 00;12;29;16

Rosanna Bertrand

Exactly. Yeah. So me and curl are really the only two ones organizing everything. And we reached out to brands and asked them if they want to join and be able to be part of our marketing posters and stuff like that, and just be able to promote them and put them out there.

00;12;29;18 - 00;12;47;03

Gary Johnston

Yeah, I think it's fantastic. It's it's one of the things that our industry has been missing. Oh yeah. Is, is an opportunity for, for those I mean, those that are deeply into the industry have the opportunities to, you know, sample and all of those things. But for those consumers not directly connected, this is a fabulous idea. So how much of the tickets?

00;12;47;07 - 00;13;06;03

Rosanna Bertrand

So basically for the networking, since you're getting to speak with the directly, people that are from the company behind the products is 4999 plus socks per person. And afterwards the Expo is general admission 2999. And for butt tenders, it's 1999 for socks.

00;13;06;05 - 00;13;06;19

Ian

Oh.

00;13;06;22 - 00;13;10;07

Gary Johnston

That's reasonable as well. And, where can we pick up the tickets?

00;13;10;09 - 00;13;20;11

Rosanna Bertrand

So basically we for the moment work with E-Transfer because our a payment processor on our website, does not support, sadly, cannabis related companies.

00;13;20;11 - 00;13;24;00

Ian

And what a surprise.

00;13;24;02 - 00;13;37;23

Rosanna Bertrand

And, yes. So basically we work with E-Transfer and of course we supply receipt and everything else that is needed. And location is already revealed. So, I mean, we just really glad to be able to welcome everyone there and be able to do this great event in the West. Honestly.

00;13;37;26 - 00;13;41;28

Gary Johnston

Is there a URL that we can direct people to to go and get the tickets for it or something?

00;13;41;29 - 00;13;57;27

Rosanna Bertrand

Yes. So basically we do have the description on our website headed up supply.com. If you go to the event section you can see everything that is mentioned there. But for the purchase itself, since our payment processor sadly does not support us, I work with E-Transfer.

00;13;57;29 - 00;13;59;24

Ian

Yeah, of course.

00;13;59;27 - 00;14;05;14

Gary Johnston

And and if that's not an example of stigma still existing for cannabis, then exactly.

00;14;05;17 - 00;14;26;15

Rosanna Bertrand

Exactly. I mean, there's so many brands out there and really minimal companies support this industry. So I mean, like you said, it's another point that we just need to to push on. If I could say and make sure that things change. We're we're in 2024 soon to be coming in 2025. So we need to make this push to.

00;14;26;18 - 00;14;38;01

Gary Johnston

And this is a legal industry. It has been legal for six years now. Not every company represented is working in the legal cannabis industry. And yet you can't get anybody to take the money for your data.

00;14;38;01 - 00;14;45;26

Rosanna Bertrand

Oh no, it's it's something honestly, it's really something to deal with. But I mean, we're making it work and hopefully with time it will come.

00;14;45;29 - 00;14;51;07

Gary Johnston

What's your favorite memories of the event you've had? What was the biggest thing, the biggest impact you found they've had so far?

00;14;51;07 - 00;15;14;03

Rosanna Bertrand

Was it honestly, it's really all the smiles that light up the room. It's everybody, not only the producers talking with processors or processors, with processors or the attendees speaking with the brands. It's really just everyone having a great smile from ear to ear and just enjoying the time that they're there, honestly, and smoking out, of course, the whole room.

00;15;14;05 - 00;15;22;27

Gary Johnston

And that is certainly one thing that is common across the industry. Those who are in cannabis are generally pretty nice people.

00;15;22;29 - 00;15;37;28

Rosanna Bertrand

It's the cannabis is the plant that reunites everyone together. It shouldn't create fights and stuff like that. In competition. Everyone should be at the same, same stage, if I could say, and you know, just be kind to everyone. What you give is what you get as they say. So.

00;15;38;01 - 00;15;50;05

Gary Johnston

And that is one thing that I see continually in our industry that people are willing to help you out. And if you need something done, they'll they'll help you get there. So so I'm pleased to see that. So how many people do you expect for these events?

00;15;50;07 - 00;16;11;15

Rosanna Bertrand

Oh gosh, a lot of people, I would say at least over 100. And that is growing every day. So, we do have limited spots. So I mean, we're just trying to be sure that we can welcome everyone. So for the Amsterdam Cafe, we're going to have two floors. So, I mean, I would just want to be sure that there's room for everyone inside.

00;16;11;19 - 00;16;12;01

Gary Johnston

And.

00;16;12;01 - 00;16;15;01

Rosanna Bertrand

Nobody's going to have to stay outside, of course.

00;16;15;03 - 00;16;33;06

Gary Johnston

And no, we wouldn't want that. So it is let's let's give the rundown again. Here, let me pull up the picture that I've got. So it's the heady dab West Coast industry networking and expo. It's happening November 21st in Vancouver. Now the stuff in the daytime. Is that also at the Amsterdam Cafe?

00;16;33;07 - 00;16;50;09

Rosanna Bertrand

Yes, exactly. So the whole day is at the, same location, if I could say like that. It's really just the separate part that we put a middle, if I could say, a kind of break, so that if people wanted to have a booth for only the expo, they have time to set up before too.

00;16;50;11 - 00;16;52;06

Gary Johnston

Wonderful. That sounds like it'll be a blast.

00;16;52;08 - 00;16;53;16

Rosanna Bertrand

Absolutely will be.

00;16;53;18 - 00;17;00;22

Gary Johnston

Yeah, I wish I could be there, but unfortunately I'm probably not going to be in Vancouver in that day. But I'll talk to some other people who were there and I'll get some rundown later.

00;17;00;23 - 00;17;03;27

Rosanna Bertrand

Awesome. Not a problem. You're located in Alberta.

00;17;04;00 - 00;17;05;01

Gary Johnston

I know, I'm in Cologne.

00;17;05;06 - 00;17;13;27

Rosanna Bertrand

In Cologne. Okay, yeah, well, we've had a lot of people from Cologne to to reaching out and saying that I was sadly a little bit too far. So I'm probably going to be on our next one too.

00;17;13;29 - 00;17;29;18

Gary Johnston

That would be a perfect venue. We've we've had a couple of conferences here that have worked out really well. I think that would be an excellent place for you to make your next step. So to come up onto the Okanagan and then we can all try it for ourselves. Well, thanks for the opportunity of of sharing the details with me, Rosanna, I appreciate that.

00;17;29;18 - 00;17;34;04

Gary Johnston

And let me ask you my hot questions. Yes. What's your favorite cultivar?

00;17;34;06 - 00;17;50;07

Rosanna Bertrand

Oh, gosh, I would have to say a good jack here for me. Honestly, the Terps behind that just hit the right spot, and it's always something. Sorry. Conferring. If I could say I. I love that strain. Honestly, it's really, really a great strain.

00;17;50;10 - 00;17;51;15

Gary Johnston

Joint to vape.

00;17;51;17 - 00;17;52;23

Ian

Oh, vape.

00;17;52;25 - 00;17;55;24

Gary Johnston

Vape. Okay. Do you have a favorite munchie.

00;17;55;27 - 00;18;03;17

Rosanna Bertrand

Oh. I don't have a favorite munchie, but I do have a really sweet tooth. So.

00;18;03;19 - 00;18;04;25

Ian

Okay.

00;18;04;28 - 00;18;07;14

Gary Johnston

So you've been known to perhaps have a munchie after.

00;18;07;16 - 00;18;10;22

Ian

Oh yeah. Some. Absolutely. Yeah.

00;18;10;24 - 00;18;14;09

Gary Johnston

And do you prefer flower or edibles.

00;18;14;11 - 00;18;31;12

Rosanna Bertrand

Ooh edibles. I love a good flower. But the, the edible, effects if I could say is just really something else. I it's more concentrate a lot and have a really high tolerance. If I could put it like that. So a good edible is always appreciated.

00;18;31;12 - 00;18;32;17

Ian

Yeah.

00;18;32;19 - 00;18;37;25

Gary Johnston

No. Why is that not a surprise when you're with the company called heady Deb.

00;18;37;28 - 00;18;38;05

Ian

That.

00;18;38;05 - 00;18;39;22

Gary Johnston

She might be in to the concentrates.

00;18;39;22 - 00;18;41;15

Ian

A bit.

00;18;41;17 - 00;18;43;04

Rosanna Bertrand

We had to make it fit.

00;18;43;07 - 00;18;57;06

00;20;18;15 - 00;20;24;00

Ian

Oh, boy, that's beautiful.

00;20;24;02 - 00;20;30;15

Gary Johnston

I always love it when I just pull open the bag and. And you look at it and you think, my goodness sakes.

00;20;30;18 - 00;20;31;24

Ian

That is absolutely.

00;20;31;24 - 00;20;33;11

Gary Johnston

Astounding. One single.

00;20;33;11 - 00;20;35;20

Ian

Bud. Wow.

00;20;35;22 - 00;21;01;20

Gary Johnston

That is that is fabulous. So let's get it ready. So. Well let's go. Let's take a peek of the Junior's loop first. Let's have a peek and see what the bud looks like. Oh my goodness. This is so beautiful and so big. And as I look at the Tricon fields, they are vast. Oh my goodness, this is such a sticky flower and such a big flower.

00;21;01;20 - 00;21;27;29

Gary Johnston

So this is new trillium from Coots Canna. They grow in salmo. And let me give you the rundown on new rhodium. Neutral is a truly exceptional. Its lineage is its fire, crossed with mince bred by Crane City Cannabis and selected and grown by coots Kenny Anselmo now gets its name from its insanely dense flowers, and I can see why they say insanely dense like that.

00;21;27;29 - 00;21;43;07

Gary Johnston

It's insane. They're so dense they almost lock in the nose until, of course, they're busted up and they explode in size and aroma. So let's take a piece of the bottom of that bud. Oh my goodness sakes, the aroma is here. Just.

00;21;43;10 - 00;21;49;18

Ian

Oh and sticky. Oh I love it.

00;21;49;20 - 00;22;22;18

Gary Johnston

They are so dense they almost lock in the nose until, of course, they're busted up and exploded in size and aroma. Now, the trappings of team are reminiscent of an old school gassy funk with a nice added pastry sweetness, blending the flavors of kush cookies and skittles for a mouth coating. Experience the smoking experience is top notch, with nice slow burning joint, thick smoke, full flavor till the last hit, and long lasting effects that combat anxiety promote euphoria, relieve stress, and stimulate appetite.

00;22;22;21 - 00;22;46;15

Gary Johnston

You'll be guaranteed to crave more of this exceptional strain. And what I'm looking at today with my new Trainium, I've got 24% THC and my total terps are sitting at 3.49 now. The predominant terps are German queen bee. Then we got beta trans, carry off, Arlene, limonene, Little Lulu and Francine. And that's probably is responsible for our pastry sweetness.

00;22;46;17 - 00;22;58;15

Gary Johnston

I can't wait to taste this. This is just a gorgeous looking bud. Now what have I got in terms of my colors that are sitting on the bud. Predominantly a dark green with some red hair enhancements.

00;22;58;18 - 00;23;00;17

Ian

But really, really dense.

00;23;00;17 - 00;23;04;05

Gary Johnston

When they say these buds are really dense, they mean it.

00;23;04;07 - 00;23;05;28

Ian

My goodness sakes.

00;23;06;00 - 00;23;40;22

Gary Johnston

So I've got a joint ready. I've got my mighty all ready to go. And I'm running my temperature at 172 today. So not terribly hot, but also not terribly low. Should be enough to get me a good buzz off that. In fact, let's try new Trillium. Truly exceptional, from coots canna at 24% THC. And this is the first taste of the mighty.

00;23;40;25 - 00;23;42;26

Gary Johnston

Oh.

00;23;42;29 - 00;23;50;23

Gary Johnston

Oh, yeah. There's some of those candy notes in there.

00;23;50;25 - 00;23;52;01

Gary Johnston

Or some.

00;23;52;04 - 00;23;54;25

Gary Johnston

Some nice gassy funk to.

00;23;54;27 - 00;23;55;25

Gary Johnston

Em.

00;23;55;28 - 00;24;03;09

Gary Johnston

All. That is very tasty.

00;24;03;11 - 00;24;09;04

Gary Johnston

Oh, loving the taste of that. There is some pastry sweetness in there. There's some kush, some cookies.

00;24;11;03 - 00;24;28;03

Gary Johnston

Now let's see what we got in terms of my thick smoke. That's going to come out of my. Oh my goodness sakes. I've already got a buzz of that. Which is always nice. And I have found that if I'm doing something in the mighty first thing in the morning, those first couple of hits are, are delivering some pretty good euphoria.

00;24;28;05 - 00;24;32;08

Gary Johnston

So let's keep it going.

00;24;32;10 - 00;24;44;13

Gary Johnston

So new Trainium, from coots Canada and, continuing to sample this. And then I'll give you a story about what coots of is.

00;24;44;16 - 00;25;06;18

Gary Johnston

Oh, really nice through the joint as well a nice and smooth, not getting a lot of harshness. I don't feel any cause to start hacking my lungs away, which is never a good thing for me. On it on the morning. This again is early in the morning. This is my first hit of the day to make sure I get the full value of what this we just going to do for me and Newtonian so far is looking pretty good.

00;25;06;18 - 00;25;33;02

Gary Johnston

My goodness that's a gorgeous looking bud. They have cured and and trimmed that so so exceptionally well. And again the smoke it is a nice thick smoke. It's full of flavor. Let's see what happens with that ash as it comes to the end of the run. All that is. And look at that. That is just solid gray.

00;25;33;04 - 00;25;59;29

Gary Johnston

I'm not seeing a touch of black in that. And when that falls off, oh that falls off really nicely. Loving that, loving the aroma, loving the taste and starting to love the effects. Let's tell you about coots Canna. So goods karma is a micro cultivation facility in Selma, BC, in the heart of the goodness. Simon Malone and his brother Aaron, who likes to go by the name of Hank, are legacy growers.

00;26;00;03 - 00;26;20;00

Gary Johnston

They got their start in the Nelson outdoor scene in 2012, shortly after they moved there in 2015. They took their winnings and started growing indoors. They quickly got bored of growing the classic strains everyone in the area was cultivating. Simon and his brother were very fortunate. They were both powerline technicians by trade and had great jobs where they made a comfortable living.

00;26;20;02 - 00;26;40;29

Gary Johnston

They were growing out of passion, not for their livelihoods. Therefore, they were able to start seed hunting without worry. They began collecting and popping seeds from a wide range of breeders, where they learned many hard lessons but kept pressing on. They started finding some special cultivars, and our nearly decade long obsession had begun.

00;26;41;02 - 00;27;01;02

Gary Johnston

Let me at one more hit off of the vaporizer before it fades away. After spending tens of thousands of dollars on genetics, they began breeding some of their own price selections to allow them to hunt through hundreds of seeds put across for keepers and save some money, and this was surprisingly successful. The majority of the genetics they run today were created by them.

00;27;01;04 - 00;27;23;16

Gary Johnston

They continue to breed and hunt new cultivars to keep the library fresh and feed their never ending desire to find cool new cultivars. In 2019, they decided to buy some property and start Coots Canner with the dream of potentially someday having a micro facility. They lost their power line contracts and were starting families wanting to pursue their passion for cannabis and to be able to stay in the code to raise their children.

00;27;23;16 - 00;27;53;14

Gary Johnston

And who wouldn't want to do that? In 2020, they bought a steel building, 2021 they erected it, and in 20 2223, they slowly build up the interior, getting licensed on December 1st, 2023 and now having their first flower ready for market in April of 2024. The build took time because they didn't have any investors. They designed and built the facility themselves and with the help of some contractors here and there, it was hands on from the foundation all the way to production.

00;27;53;17 - 00;28;12;14

Gary Johnston

That is pretty cool. And they also found the selection that they were fortunate enough to be trusted by Crane City Cannabis to be one of the testers of new genetics, and they hunted through his men's line and found multiple keepers that they still run. Now he's one of the best breeders around, and it sounds like you guys are doing a pretty good job, too.

00;28;12;16 - 00;28;34;03

Gary Johnston

Simon and Hank Coots Canna Anselmo I love the cuties. I love lots of places in the goodness. I've known people who have lived in Salem for years. My brother, my brother Bill, who departed on us last year, he used to spend a lot of time in Selma. So cool that they're growing some cool weed. And so far I'm getting a pretty good buzz on this.

00;28;34;10 - 00;28;43;18

Gary Johnston

I'm going to fire my mighty back up. So I am about halfway through the joint now. I've got lots of euphoria coming in. I got my happy eyes showing up.

00;28;43;20 - 00;28;46;15

Gary Johnston

Oh, that feeling of just.

00;28;46;17 - 00;28;48;25

Gary Johnston

Oh, this is going to be a nice.

00;28;48;25 - 00;28;49;25

Gary Johnston

Day.

00;28;49;27 - 00;29;11;27

Gary Johnston

You never know where it's going to go or how it's going to get there, but you're always hoping it's going to be a pretty nice climb. And I got my second dosing capsule to throw in to the mighty to see what we get in terms of my cuts, Kenneth Neutron him cute name as well. I just love the name New Trillium.

00;29;12;19 - 00;29;28;10

Gary Johnston

And I have to say it is a pretty dense flower and boy oh boy is it ever sweet. I'm definitely tasting some of the Francine some of those notes in there. Some some of the spiciness from the baby carry off lean.

00;29;28;12 - 00;29;37;27

Gary Johnston

Oh and when you put that in the vaporizer, those tastes just become so much more abundant.

00;29;39;06 - 00;29;50;21

Gary Johnston

And I'm learning to taste the smoke. So bring in the vapor actually literally swallow it. So you taste that flavor. And boy it is really really nice.

00;29;51;20 - 00;29;58;08

Gary Johnston

And my euphoria and endocannabinoid system seems to be.

00;29;59;05 - 00;30;15;22

Gary Johnston

Encouragingly feeling pretty nice about this. Again tracking the ash, the joint. There's not a bit of black in that. It is solid gray and it hangs off and falls really, really nicely. It is a nice thick smoke.

00;30;17;28 - 00;30;44;18

Gary Johnston

So hopefully we're combating a little anxiety. We're definitely promoting some euphoria. I can feel the stress kind of removing itself from my body. Now do I need the appetite stimulant perhaps. I don't but that never stops me anyways. Oh my goodness. You can probably tell as well from the fact that I'm starting to ramble pretty good.

00;30;44;20 - 00;30;45;07

Gary Johnston

Oh, that's.

00;30;45;07 - 00;31;11;00

Gary Johnston

Really nice in the mighty. I just love the taste of that. So I'm definitely getting some of those gassy notes. Some of those sweet candy notes. Oh, delicious. And this would be a good part to add the additional pieces of data that I forgot to add before, and that is at Coos Canna. They have three flower rooms. They grow in cocoa cooler, hang dry hand trim, and three week cure on all of their flowers.

00;31;11;02 - 00;31;34;21

Gary Johnston

That may be why this flower looks so darn good. So produced by coots Kenneth Anselmo. Packaged and distributed through Antidotes in Nelson and coming through the direct delivery channel to It's Up in Smoke. It'll be here soon. Remember, if you want to pick some up for yourself, you can go to It's Up in Smoke. If you're 19 or older and live in B.C., you can arrange to have some scent for you once it arrives.

00;31;34;21 - 00;32;05;05

Gary Johnston

And that's going to be soon. And oh my goodness sakes, my euphoria is just exploding. My happy eyes or a happy, very, very happy. I have been looking forward to trying this one. And finally the opportunity arrived. THC 24%. My total turps 3.49%. This is. You hear me say it a lot, but I say it because I feel it.

00;32;05;07 - 00;32;31;06

Gary Johnston

This is really good. It is just going right to my endocannabinoid system. My all my receptors are just. Ready for more. Receptive is what they are. I am pretty blitzed right now. I'm not sure where this is going to go to, but I have to say I am pretty happy with coots, canna and their new trainium. It's a new cultivar that's coming to the market.

00;32;31;06 - 00;32;39;07

Gary Johnston

You'll be able to access it soon. I am so happy you got my hands on it. And this is going to be one fine day.

00;32;39;10 - 00;32;46;07

Ian

Sharing stories about good weed while trying good weed. This is the cannabis potcast.

00;32;46;09 - 00;33;23;27

Gary Johnston

And for this story, we're going to the outskirts here. This was written by Pat Bonner. Yukoners consume more weed than most Canadians, continuing a tradition that pre-dates legalization, a new report says. Pre legalization, yukoners were known to consume cannabis at a higher per capita rates, about 21% than the national average of 14%. Five years into legalization, Yukoners still use cannabis at a higher rate of 41%, but the difference compared to Canadian provinces of 35% is similar to pre legalization, says a report commissioned to review the territory's Cannabis Control and Regulation Act.

00;33;23;27 - 00;33;49;01

Gary Johnston

After five years of legalization. Since the legalization of cannabis in 2018, the Yukon's cannabis industry has demonstrated consistent growth year over year. Right. Sandy Silver, minister responsible for the Yukon Liquor Corp., in an introduction to the report released in October. Sales in the legal cannabis market have grown significantly, from 2,000,000 in 2018 19 to 13 million in 20 2324.

00;33;49;04 - 00;34;16;03

Gary Johnston

Yukon's first government run cannabis store opened on October 17th, 2018, the day of legalization, with a commitment to transfer retail cannabis sales to the private sector, said the report. In April of 2019, the first private sector cannabis store opened in Whitehorse, leading to the closure of the government store in May of 2022. Private retailers were authorized to offer online sales and delivery, and the government e-commerce site shut down shortly after.

00;34;16;05 - 00;34;50;21

Gary Johnston

Yukon now has six licensed retailers. In Whitehorse, there's four, Dawson City one and in Watson Lake, one and one federally licensed producer located in Whitehorse. Jointly, these six retailers employ approximately 44 employees, report says. Among the report's findings, sourcing from legal retail sources by Yukon consumers increased to 79% in 2022 and 82% in 2023. The most popular cannabis product categories are dried cannabis flower end pre-rolls, edibles, vape cartridges and inhaled extracts.

00;34;50;23 - 00;35;16;14

Gary Johnston

There's been a reduction in alcohol consumption since cannabis legalization in 2023. 25% of Yukon respondents who used cannabis and alcohol in the past 12 months reported drinking less alcohol, while 66% drank the same amount based on World Health Organization methodology, 6% of Yukon respondents were considered at high risk of problematic cannabis use, while 30% were moderate risk and 64% at low risk.

00;35;16;14 - 00;35;47;17

Gary Johnston

In 2023, the Yukon version of the Cannabis Policy Study in the territories asked respondents if they had used cannabis at work or within two hours of starting work in the past 30 days, 9% of cannabis using respondents answered yes in 2023, unchanged from 2022. In 2023, 11% of Yukon respondents who used cannabis in the past 12 months indicated they had driven a vehicle within two hours of cannabis use, down from 15% in 2022.

00;35;47;19 - 00;36;15;06

Gary Johnston

Criminal charges are down with reduced illicit market activity, data shows. Most charges laid are related to impaired driving or possession of cannabis in a vehicle. Emergency department visits related to cannabis use are up. In the years preceding legalization, 2013 to 18, the territory saw 275 emergency room visits related to cannabis use, and between 2018 and 23, there were 471 emergency visits.

00;36;15;08 - 00;36;51;08

Gary Johnston

Coroner data shows more than five cannabis related motor vehicle fatalities annually in 2018 and 19, less than 5 in 2020, 21 and 22. The territorial government received 75% of the federal government excise tax on cannabis sold in the Yukon, and for the 2223 fiscal year, the total amount was $952,639. The report also asked for public input. Public engagement showed concerns from some stakeholders regarding access to edible cannabis by youth, especially gummies and other edibles that look like candy.

00;36;51;10 - 00;37;15;02

Gary Johnston

Well, there have been media reports around accidental consumption of adults by children. These products were in general sourced from the illegal market and had colorful packaging made to look like regular candy. It's important to note that legal edibles, such as gummies, must meet Health Canada's packaging requirements and the attitude of it's legal so it's harmless is of concern to many stakeholders and the public in general.

00;37;15;04 - 00;37;37;01

Gary Johnston

Ongoing high rates of consumption among youth in the Yukon, despite the protective measures, are concerning to engagement respondents. There seems to be public misunderstanding and confusion around which online sites are legal versus illicit, and cannabis retailers said they want to offer loyalty programs to be allowed to sell products such as T-shirts, snacks and growing equipment direct to retailers.

00;37;37;01 - 00;37;59;19

Gary Johnston

Sales from licensed producers to set themselves apart from other retailers proved competition with the illicit market and lower costs, and the recommendations. The report directed the Yukon Liquor Corporation to research the pros and cons of direct retailer sales as an alternative for licensees who choose to do so. Loyalty programs and branded merchandise should be investigated as well, the report said.

00;37;59;21 - 00;38;15;12

Gary Johnston

And finally, the report called on the liquor corporation to research options to create public consumption spaces for tourists and special events. So there's a special report on the state of the cannabis world in the Yukon in 2024. And thanks to the RZA.

00;38;15;14 - 00;38;23;29

Ian

Exploring the world of Canadian cannabis culture one toke at a time. This is the cannabis potcast.

00;38;24;01 - 00;38;47;08

Gary Johnston

And we picked the story up from scratch. Concur as well. This is written by staff. Alberta's cannabis regulator has launched a campaign to encourage cannabis consumers to not use the illicit market. Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis. The Anglesea launched their Forget Bad Bud campaign in October, drawing attention to the differences between the legal and illegal cannabis market in Canada.

00;38;47;10 - 00;39;14;02

Gary Johnston

Similar to a recent campaign launched in Ontario, the AG LLC's Forget Bad Bud campaign focuses on issues like quality control, strain selection and education. It also seeks to educate consumers on how to identify an illegal cannabis store, especially the prolific number of illegal cannabis websites that ship cannabis products across the country from the website. When you buy illegal, you can't be sure what you're kidding.

00;39;14;05 - 00;39;38;23

Gary Johnston

A website could look like the real deal, but open you up to identity theft and fraud. That same old bud you bought for years may look legit, but instead come loaded with ingredients that cause a dangerous reaction and potency levels that could result in unwanted effects. The campaign includes several short videos with people breaking up with their illicit cannabis dealers, as well as an online quiz to test people's knowledge about cannabis and Canada's legal cannabis program.

00;39;38;28 - 00;39;57;09

Gary Johnston

Enforcement against illicit online cannabis retailers has been a challenge for law enforcement in Canada. Such websites are easily discovered in online searches, and we'll post a couple of the links to some of these postings so you can check them out for yourself on the web page for the Cannabis potcast. And in fact, let's take the online quiz now.

00;39;57;10 - 00;40;19;01

Gary Johnston

I will post this on the Cannabis potcast so you can get here too. When it comes to product strength, concentrate are typically the most potent cannabis products. Click on True or False to select your answer. I would suggest true correct concentrates are extracted using a chemical process, creating a more potent cannabis product because of the higher THC level in concentrates.

00;40;19;03 - 00;40;41;01

Gary Johnston

These products are very easy to overuse and come with more risks. Let's go to the next question. Shaken, stirred or on the rocks. Your beverage of choice is riskier with a side of cannabis. Click on true or false. I'm going to suggest true. Correct. No matter what you're drinking or how you're drinking it, using cannabis is riskier when you're consuming alcohol.

00;40;41;01 - 00;40;47;19

Gary Johnston

And now we'll hit the next question. Using a joint vapor bong means that you'll feel the effects very quickly.

00;40;47;21 - 00;40;53;12

Gary Johnston

Let's see. True or false? I'm going to go true. Correct.

00;40;53;14 - 00;41;09;29

Gary Johnston

Unlike the delivery time of the takeout you ordered during prime time on Friday night, the effects of inhaling cannabis can be felt within seconds to minutes. Next question. The long term effects of vaping remain unknown. Am. Let me think now. You know, that's probably true.

00;41;10;01 - 00;41;11;05

Gary Johnston

Correct.

00;41;11;07 - 00;41;30;13

Gary Johnston

Unlike your retirement goals, vaping does not have a life long plan charted out for its effects on your health. Vaping is still a new way to use cannabis, and researchers need more evidence comparing the long term effects on lung health of smoked versus vaporized cannabis. To make specific recommendations. I think there's one more question. So we're going to go yes there is.

00;41;30;19 - 00;41;58;21

Gary Johnston

So we'll finish it off. You have the same risk as everyone else when it comes to using cannabis. It's a strange question. I'm quite sure what that means. You have the same risks as everyone else when it comes to using cannabis. Well, I guess the answer's got to be true. No, it's not. Your family history, personal patterns of use, age of first use, and other factors all play a role in determining how cannabis affects you.

00;41;58;23 - 00;42;07;02

Gary Johnston

Choosing to use in moderation will help lower your risks. Well, I got one of them wrong.

00;42;07;04 - 00;42;21;16

Gary Johnston
